چکیده

The use of virtual reality (VR) display systems has escalated over the last 5 yr and may have consequences for those working within vision research. This paper provides a brief review of the literature pertaining to the representation of depth in stereoscopic VR displays. Specific attention is paid to the response of the accommodation system with its cross-links to vergence eye movements, and to the spatial errors that arise when portraying three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional window. It is suggested that these factors prevent large depth intervals of three-dimensional visual space being rendered with integrity through dual two-dimensional arrays.

Depth Perception and Visual After-effects at Stereoscopic Workbench Displays

The vivid and clear way of virtual scene presentation in Virtual Environments (VE) is nearly exclusively accomplished by stereoscopic displays. Depth perception with these displays differs from the viewing conditions in reality and causes usability problems. For this reason three important aspects of visualization at a stereoscopic workbench display were analyzed. The results of three experimen...

Stereoscopic perception of women in real and virtual environments: A study towards educational neuroscience

Previous studies report the involvement of specific brain activation in stereoscopic vision and the perception of depth information. This work presents the first comparative results of adult women on the effects of stereoscopic perception in three different static environments; a real, a two dimensional (2D) and a stereoscopic three dimensional (3D), all with the same content. Electric brain ac...

Efficient Steoroscopic Rendering in Virtual Endoscopy Applications

Optical endoscopy suffers from several problems which increase the difficulties of a successful intervention. Among these problems are the limited spatial or depth perception, and the fish-eye effect which virtually flattens the geometry of the anatomical structures. Standard virtual endoscopy is inflicted by similar problems. In this paper, we present stereoscopic VIVENDI, an approach for the ...

Synthetic Stereoscopic Panoramic Images

Presented here is a discussion of the techniques required to create stereoscopic panoramic images. Such images allow interactive exploration of 3D environments with stereoscopic depth cues. If projected in a surround display environment they can engage the two characteristics of the human visual system responsible for immersion, namely stereopsis and peripheral vision.

Psychometric Assessment of Stereoscopic Head- Mounted Displays

In this work, which is part of the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine Operational Based Vision Assessment program, a high resolution stereoscopic head-mounted display (HMD), X-Plane image generators, and an OptiTrack head-tracking system were used to render an immersive three-dimensional constructive environment. The purpose of this effort was to quantify the impact of aircrew vision o...
